Oman marks World Wildlife Day

Muscat: Represented by the Environment Authority, the Sultanate of Oman on Sunday celebrated World Wildlife Day under the slogan ”Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation”.

World Wildlife Day, 3 March every year, seeks to raise environmental awareness. It focuses on digital innovation and the use of technologies and digital preservation services to advance the process of wildlife conservation. It also underscores the need to espouse sustainable and legal business in wildlife.

The Environment Authority is undertaking extensive efforts to protect wildlife through a number of environmental projects and initiatives.

These include the National Biodiversity Survey Project, which aims at protecting terrestrial and marine organisms and utilizing modern technologies to monitor wildlife.

The process of wildlife monitoring involves the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and the installation of satellite tracking devices.

The outcomes of the survey are analysed for the sake of better follow-up and use of statistics to protect marine and terrestrial organisms. The process helps understand the species’ life-cycle and environmental balance. Camera traps are also used to monitor fungal organisms.

The Environment Authority takes further measures to improve Oman’s environmental performance index in the area of biodiversity.
