Oman's inflation falls 0.1% in January

Muscat: The inflation rate in the Sultanate of Oman in January 2024 fell by 0.1 percent compared to the same month in 2023 for the base year 2018, according to the latest data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) on consumer price index numbers.

The decrease in the price index in January 2024 compared to the same month in 2023 was due to a fall in the prices of the main groups. The transportation group fell by 3.4 percent, education group by 0.4 percent, restaurants and hotels group by 0.2 percent, clothing and footwear group by 0.2 percent, and the communications group by 0.2 percent.

The food and non-alcoholic beverages group rose by 1.4 percent, miscellaneous personal goods and services group rose by 2.3 percent and the tobacco group rose by 2.4 percent, while the prices of the remaining groups remained stable, according to the latest NCSI data.

In the food and non-alcoholic beverages group, the prices of fruits increased by 9.2 percent, milk, cheese, and eggs by 6.7 percent, and food products not classified under another heading by 4.2 percent, sugar, jam, honey, and sweets by 3.6 percent, oils and fats by 2.3 percent, bread and cereals by 1.5 percent, and vegetables by 1.3 percent. Meat by 0.7 percent and non-alcoholic beverages by 0.7 percent, while fish prices decreased by 10.3 percent.

Muscat Governorate recorded the highest rate of decline in inflation at the end of January 2024 compared to the same period last year by falling by 0.4 percent.

The Governorates of Al Dakhiliyah and North Al Batinah also saw a drop in inflation rate by 0.1 percent. In contrast, the inflation rate rose by 0.7 percent in the Dhofar Governorate and by 0.5 percent in the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. The inflation rate was 0.3 percent in Al Dhahirah Governorate, 0.2 percent in Musandam Governorate and 0.1 percent in each of the Al Sharqiyah South, Al Batinah South and Buraimi governorates. The inflation rate also stabilised in Al Wusta Governorate.
