Muscat : The production of wheat in the Sultanate of Oman for the agricultural season 2022/2023 recorded an increase of 229 percent, amounting to 7,119,403 tonnes, compared to the last season (2021/2022) when the output was 2,169.98 tonnes.
Statistics from the Ministry of
Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources indicate that the total area of land for wheat cultivation in the 2022/2023 season reached (6359.35) acres, recording an increase of 160 percent compared to the last season, and the number of farmers during the current season increased by 24 percent.
Dhofar Governorate ranked first in terms of cultivated area (5,112) acres, representing 80 percent of the total wheat cultivated area in the Sultanate of Oman, and first in terms of wheat crop productivity at the governorate level, with a production of 5,940 tonnes, representing 83 percent of the total production.
The Al Dakhiliyah Governorate came in second in terms of area (779 acres), representing 12 percent of the total wheat cultivated area in Oman, with a production of 801 tonnes, representing 11 percent of the total output.
Al Dhahirah Governorate ranked third in terms of area (245 acres), representing 4 percent of the total cultivated and and with a production of 249 tonnes, representing 3.5 percent of the output
The cultivated area in Al Buraimi Governorate reached 33.25 acres with a production quantity of 38,330 tonnes, North Al Batinah Governorate 41.1 acres with a production quantity of 35.87 tonnes, while the cultivated area in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate reached 66.5 acres with a production of 33,134 tonnes.
In the South Al Batinah Governorate, wheat was cultivated on 57 acres with a production amount of 16.33 tonnes, Musandam Governorate with a cultivated area of 13 acres and a production amount of 2.489 tonnes, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate with a cultivated area of 9.5 acres and a production amount of 2.350 tonnes, and Muscat with a cultivated area 3 acres with a production quantity of 0.7 tonnes.
In partnership with the private sector to support the food security system and encourage small and medium enterprises and farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Oman Flour Mills Company for the purchase of locally produced wheat crop from Omani farmers during the harvest season. The Oman Flour Mills Company received about 5,000 tonnes from farmers for the 2022/2023 season.
