US Central Command said a missile fired from a Yemeni area controlled by Iran-backed Houthi rebels struck a Norwegian-flagged tanker off Yemen on Monday.
"The Motor Tanker STRINDA was attacked by what is assessed to have been an Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM) launched from a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen while passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb," US CENTCOM said in a statement, in reference to the strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa.
The struck tanker reported damage which led to a fire on board, CENTCOM said, adding that no casualties were reported at the time. The command also said that no US ships were in the vicinity at the time of the attack.
