Muscat: Muscat Municipality has issued a tender to implement a project for street vendors in the southern Mawaleh area, along Sultan Qaboos Street, with a total area of 16,715 square metres.
Project goals:
The project aims to organise the activities of street vendors in the Wilayat of Seeb in general and distribute them according to vital sites and areas, in line with the municipality’s plans regarding the increase in the activity of the number of street vendors, and the resulting randomness in organization, as the project wanted to protect vital and residential sites from direct emissions of smoke from grilling carts. In addition to developing and beautifying the area located in the project site, while at the same time preserving the economic and social returns of street vendors’ activities, in addition to Muscat Municipality’s keenness to take care of the health aspects of these activities in a way that ensures the health and safety of the consumer, and facilitates the roles of health control and the performance of food inspection teams within one environment, which enhances the improvement of the services provided and food safety.
Project elements:
The street vendors project was designed in a distinguished location in the southern Mawaleh area in the state of Seeb to ensure the provision of a designated space for street vendors, including all the necessary services and facilities for them. The project accommodates 25 street vendors’ carts, surrounding a shaded central plaza area designated for seating, bordered by a children’s play area, in addition to providing a number of restrooms and 176 parking spaces.
Through this project, it is hoped to facilitate the environment for street vendors to operate, in addition to reducing traffic congestion in the area, while improving the general appearance. Also reducing random sales scattered across several sites in the area, while increasing the efficiency of the place and humanizing it to accommodate the frequenting of families and children and encouraging them to sit and enjoy the project’s vicinity, taking into account organising the entrances and exits to the site to avoid the unhealthy effects of residential neighborhoods.
