Dhofar gears up to welcome Khareef tourists

Muscat: Dhofar is ready to welcome guests to the Khareef Festival 2018, according to a top official at the municipality.
Abdul Qader bin Ahmed Al Haddad, Deputy Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, said Cyclone Mekunu, which affected Dhofar, showed just how prepared the national committees, emergency teams, and NGOs were to deal with its impact.
“After declaring a contingency state following the cyclone, the municipality held several follow-up meetings to discuss other emergency alternatives to contain the effects of the storm,” he said.
Al Haddad added that Dhofar Municipality played a big role in containing these effects by providing necessary services, such as roads, lighting, water drainage, and sanitation, which sped up the repair of damaged infrastructure and strengthened efforts by emergency teams to restore water, electricity, and environmental services.
He pointed out that the municipality’s top officials also paid field visits to the affected areas in the wilayats of Salalah, Mirbat, Sadah, Taqah, and Rakyhut to follow up and review damage caused to road networks and lighting.
“The municipality also took all measures and procedures to deal with the conditions of public services and provide them at the earliest opportunity,” he explained.
The municipality also coordinated with other government and private agencies to reopen all affected roads which link wilayats in the governorate, he added.
Royal Oman Police (ROP) has beefed up its force to ensure a safe Khareef season in Salalah.
“The Royal Oman Police force has been sent to the Dhofar governorate, to ensure the security of events at the Salalah Tourism Festival 2018, under the patronage of Major-General Hamad Al Hattami, Assistant Inspector-General of Police and Customs,” ROP said.
