Muscat: A group of fishermen rescued a loggerhead turtle entangled in a fishing net on Masirah Island on Saturday.

The rescue was caught on camera and shared by the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) on their social media accounts, including Facebook and Twitter.
“A group of fishermen rescued an entangled loggerhead turtle yesterday morning. The poor turtle was entangled in fishing nets, which were incorrectly discarded on the beach. Great job guys!” a post from the official ESO Facebook account read.
ESO has, in the past, issued warnings about fishing nets used in the sea and on beaches, which are one of the leading threats to turtles in the wild.
The entanglement of marine creatures in nets, apart from fish, is known as by-catch.
The International Union For The Conservation of Nature has classified the loggerhead turtle as a vulnerable species. Some rough estimates put their number at 200,000. Different sub-species of the loggerhead turtle are found in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Oceans, the Mediterranean Sea, and elsewhere.
