Sohar: The organic fig farm project in the Wilayat of Sohar, North Al Batinah Governorate is one of the investment projects employing modern technology.
The project is one of the outcomes of the food security laboratory under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources aiming to boost the local production of fig and to provide the local market with various indigenous products.
Yousef bin Mohammed Al Miqbali, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the project, said that the investment value of the organic fig farm project is OMR150,000 over an area of sixteen feddans.
The integrated farm project is for growing fig trees of high quality, he said, adding that the project’s execution is in accordance with the executive plan which included the fencing of the farm, digging of wells , installation of irrigation network system and planting 4,000 fig trees in the first phase of the project while 5,000 fig plants would be planted by the end of the current year in line with an executive plan to reach 16,000 fig plants on a total area of 16. 5 feddans.
The total productivity of fig farms is expected to reach 5,000 to 7, 000 tonnes annually, he said.
The second phase of the project targets agri-tourism, where greenhouses would be prepared and the third phase of the project is for the establishment of a laboratory for production of fish fertilizer and compost fertilizer, he added.
It is worth mentioning that the fig farm is an organic farm in which insecticides and chemical fertilizers are not used. -ONA
