Omani researchers get global recognition for environment-friendly innovation

Muscat: Two Omani researchers have got global recognition for their environment-friendly product used in the drilling of oil wells.

Omani inventors Tasneem bint Mohammed Al Dawoodi and Salma bint Salim Al Sidairi worked on date seeds oil and used cooking/kitchen oil to manufacture the product.

Tasneem Al Dawoodi said that the idea of the project was to use the waste and recycle date seeds into a material used for drilling oil wells. This material is environment–friendly, low cost and highly efficient, she added.

After graduating from the college and training at Mohammed Al Barwani Petroleum Services Company, she said that success came after eight months of hard work. She added that she has applied for the patent of the product.

The work on the project started in April 2018 and included technical, economic and development aspects in order to maintain the standards necessary for the product to become available in the market, she said. On the challenges the project faced, Salma bint Salim Al Sidairi said that we faced many difficulties for almost five years which included lack of technical support and required labs but we managed to keep our calm and continued with the project.

Among the difficulties in upgrading the project to the international standards, she said that initially we lacked support but following the success of the idea, the labs of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Mohammed Al Barwani Petroleum Services Company and PDO extended their helping hands..
