Muscat: The city of Salalah received 617 mm of rain from May 23 to 27, officials announced on Sunday. To place this in context, Oman’s average rainfall is 117mm annually.
Regarding the recent rains, the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Environment said, “Dhofar governorate had witnessed a heavy rainfall, in which Salalah had recorded the highest, with 617 mm from May 23 to May 27 due to Cyclone Mekunu.”
The cyclone also caused large rainfalls in Taqah, which recorded 275 mm, while Mirbat received 221 mm, Rakhyoot had 214 mm, Thumrait recorded 196 mm, and Sadah received 180 mm. Moreover, the Sahalnoot Dam collected 6.4 million cubic metres of water.
The nation’s other dams include Al Hemayah, which received 29 million cubic metres, and Shako Dam in Rakyhoot, which recorded 3000 cubic metres of water. — Photos by ONA
