Muscat: Two men have died after their car was swept away in heavy flooding caused by rains in the aftermath of Cyclone Mekunu, police have confirmed.
An official at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said: "Two men died after their vehicle was swept away in a wadi in Zeek in the wilayat of Salalah on Sunday morning." The official added that their vehicle was swept away following the indirect impact of the Cyclone Mekunu, bringing the total death toll so far to six.
Speaking to the Times of Oman, the police official said, “Yes, it (the death toll) is now six. Yesterday it was four, then, two more deaths today morning.”
Cyclone Mekunu made landfall as a Category 2 storm on the coast of Dhofar early on Saturday morning, bringing with it heavy rains and strong winds, with wind speeds between 80 and 85 knots.
