Ministerial decision sets energy efficiency norms for ACs

Muscat: Norms for the energy efficiency of air conditioners have been set in Ministerial Decision No. 107/2018, based on the GCC Standard No. (GSO 2530/2016 (E)), issued by Dr. Ali bin Massoud Al Sunaidi, Minister of Commerce and Industry.
It is an obligatory Omani standard in coordination with the General Authority for Electricity and Water, Electricity Regulatory Authority, Public Authority for Consumer Protection, the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, Implementation and Follow-up Support Unit "Tanfeedh", and other related entities, institutions and companies in this field.
The standard is intended to help reduce electricity consumption by split units and window air conditioners, which are among the most power-consuming devices.
Energy efficiency cards will be placed clearly on all air conditioners’ interfaces specified in the standard to help consumers choose air conditioners that use the least power. The more stars on the card, the less power the air conditioner consumes.
Enterprises and companies have six months from the day after the publication of the decision in the Official Gazette to clear their stock of air conditioners not conforming to the standard specification.
Article 3 of the Ministerial decision stipulates that an administrative fine of not more than OMR5,000 will be imposed on anyone who contravenes the provisions of this decision. The fine shall be doubled in case of repeated violations.
