Muscat: A schoolgirl has died at the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah, Dhofar after she was thrown against a wall by the force of Cyclone Mekunu winds, Royal Oman Police confirmed.

The emergency service confirmed the death and appealed to all residents in Dhofar to stay safe during Cyclone Mekunu and not to take any unnecessary risks by venturing outside.

According to the police statement, the young girl "died from injuries sustained after the strong Mekunu winds crushed her against a house wall."

The Category 2 cyclone is expected to make landfall by midnight and some areas of the state are already experiencing high winds and flooding.

An ROP statement appealed for everyone to "take the utmost care and vigilance" and to remain indoors until the storm subsides.
