Muscat: Tropical storm Mekunu, that's currently headed towards Salalah from the Arabian Sea, will turn into a Category 2 cyclone in the coming 36 hours, according to the Public Authority of Civil Aviation's Meteorology Department.
The wind speed is estimated to be at 65 to 75 knots (117 kmph-135 kmph), at a latitude of 55.9°N and longitude 11.4°E. The centre of the storm is about 570 km from Salalah, while the nearest convective clouds is about 80 km from the Wilayat of Sadah.
The centre added that the latest weather maps and models of numerical predictions indicate the possibility of rain starting from Wednesday in Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates. It will develop into heavy thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday, accompanied by high speed winds. The sea will be rough on the coasts with wave heights reaching a maximum of 5-8 metres, while in South Sharqiyah, the sea waves will reach heights of 3-4 metres.
