Muscat: A large number of flights were delayed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai on Sunday, as the airport upgrades its Instrument Landing System (ILS) that guides flights on its main runway.
Mumbai airport handles around 950 flight movements a day, and 45 flight movements an hour. Usually, flights take off and land on the main runway, but owing to the system upgrade, airlines are using the secondary runway which has a lower capacity.
Indian airline Jet Airways, said: "Arrival and departure delays expected at Mumbai Airport till June 5, due to runway equipment upgradation activity at Mumbai. We request our guests to check their flight status before leaving for the airport."
The statement further added, "Due to the Instrumental Landing System (ILS) at Mumbai Airport, runway 27 being inoperative, we expect heavy air traffic congestion and consequential delays of up to 40 minutes of all arrivals and departures until 1600 hours."
