Muscat: The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) denied what has been circulated on social media regarding cases of domestic violence against women in the Sultanate, and has explained that the number of cases dealt with in 2022 did not exceed 17 cases.
The Ministry said in clarification: “The Ministry of Social Development has followed up what is being circulated on social media about statistics related to domestic violence in the Sultanate of Oman, and the Ministry confirms that these statistics are incorrect."
Recently, people on social media circulated unofficial statements saying that 75% of domestic violence cases in the Sultanate are not reported.
MoSD explained: “After verifying the source, it was found that the aforementioned statistic was based on a study issued by the Ministry, dating back to the year 2017, related to the community's understanding of the issue of domestic violence. This came in the results of opinion questionnaires on a limited sample, and it is not possible to measure or generalise their results.”
The Ministry has confirmed that the cases that were dealt with through Dar Al Wefaq during the year 2022 amounted to 17 cases of Omani women who were subjected to abuse.
In addition, the Ministry has called on everyone to investigate accuracy and credibility when publishing or republishing statistics and data, and to obtain information from official sources.
