Muscat: Nama Water Services (NES), has urged people to rationalise water consumption due to the effect of the green tide phenomenon on water production.
"We draw your attention that the main desalination and water production plants in the Wilayat of Barka have been affected by the green tide phenomenon, which results in a cessation and decrease in the quantities of desalinated water, which requires the operating companies to take a number of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the plants and the quality of the water produced, " the company said in a statement.
" To reduce the impact on subscribers, Nama Water Services has activated emergency plans by operating alternative sources and reserve wells, and activating the interconnection between the desalination plants in Sohar, Barka and Al Ghubra."
"The company calls on its esteemed subscribers to cooperate by taking the necessary precautions and rationalising water consumption until the sea water quality improves. For more inquiries, please contact the call centre 1442," the company added.
Green tides are fast-growing macroalgae bloom, which have been observed in many coastal waters in recent years.
