Muscat: The National Survey Authority at the Ministry of Defense has acquired a mobile mapping system. In addition to the capabilities that the authority possesses, cadastral capabilities will enable it to carry out its national role in providing all requirements of geospatial data to all government and private agencies with full efficiency and competence.
A mobile mapping system is a device with several components for collecting geospatial data from a moving vehicle, usually equipped with an array of imagery, radar, laser, or any number of remote sensing systems, and this unit takes 360-degree images and collects cloud points.
It also gathers laser data for coordinates and altitude information at a high density of up to two million points per second, using a scanning laser, and simultaneously monitoring (GNSS) data to obtain a location with an accuracy in centimetres. The primary outputs from these systems include (GIS) data, digital maps, geo-referenced images, and cloud points.
The system provides the National Survey Authority with a rapid mechanism for capturing data with high accuracy, and can be used in many applications related to 3D city modeling, asset management, condition assessment, land use, detailed and topographic surveying, volume calculations, disaster management, building control, housing and structure mapping, basic mine surveys and appraisals, and other applications.
