Muscat: The elections for the General Federation of Oman Workers, (GFOW), for the coming period (2023-2027) will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, May 3, 2023, in the Sultanate of Oman, in the presence of regional and international organisations.

The General Federation of Workers of the Sultanate of Oman will hold its fourth conference tomorrow, under the auspices of His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Muhammad Al-Saeedi, Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, and in the presence of a number of Excellencies, honorable judges, and representatives of the Arab and regional and international labour organisations.

This will be with the participation of (291) male and female trade unionists, members of the General Assembly of the Federation representing (142) trade unions, and (5) trade unions in the oil and gas, industry, construction, tourism and electricity sectors.

In addition, participants include Arab and international labour organisations, labour unions and committees in GCC countries, the Executive Office of the Council of Ministers of Labour and Social Affairs in the GCC countries, and a number of Arab labour organisations in Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Tunisia, Palestine, the Arab Trade Union Confederation, the Federation Industries International, the International Transport Workers' Federation, and the Norwegian Trade Union Confederation.

The opening ceremony of the conference will include speeches by the three production parties: the General Federation of the Sultanate’s Workers, the Ministry of Labour, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Oman, in addition to two speeches by the Arab and international labour organizations.

Visual presentations and acting scenes related to some of the roles and practices will be carried out by trade unions, that reflect the reality of workers in the private sector. The set of achievements achieved by the trade union system during the period (2019-2022) will be highlighted, after which the work of the conference will be completed to include a number of axes, including the election of the president and members of the Board of Directors of the General Federation for the period (2023-2027) through the electronic voting system.

The election results will be announced at the end of the conference.

The pre-conference phase witnessed the issuance of the bylaws for the electoral committees of the General Federation of Workers of the Sultanate of Oman, according to which the main committee was formed in addition to the Appeals Committee, the Elections Supervision Committee, and the Election Center Organising and Preparing Committee, ensuring its proper functioning, and supervising it.

It is worth noting that the General Federation of Workers of the Sultanate of Oman held its first (founding) conference on February 15, 2010, with the participation of (88) members representing (45) labour unions, which represents the official launch of the Federation at local and external levels.

The Articles of Association of the Federation were approved during the conference, and (11) members of the Federation’s Board of Directors were elected for the period (2010-2014). (5) members of the Financial Control Committee were also elected.

This was followed by the second conference of the General Union on February 16, 2014, which enjoyed wider participation, including (226) members representing (112) trade unions and one sectoral trade union, and then its third conference on March 4, 2019, in which (301) members representing (148) labour unions and (4) sectoral trade unions participated.
