National Museum showcases Empty Quarter’s treasures

Muscat: Bringing treasures from the world’s greatest desert to the audiences in Muscat for the first time, the National Museum inaugurated a new exhibition dedicated to history’s two recorded crossings of the Empty Quarter.
The world-renowned team behind the second endeavour opened the temporary exhibit. Mark Evans, a member of the “Crossing the Empty Quarter” team and founder of Outward Bound Oman, launched the Arabic edition of his new book during the ceremony. The exhibition will remain open and free for all museum goers for the next three months.
The displays include a khanjar worn by Sheikh Saleh bin Kalut during his crossing with Betram Thomas in the early 1930s.
Sheikh Mubarak Al Rashdi, a member of the expedition and a descendant of Sheikh Saleh, told the Times of Oman: “I was very proud to go on this journey, as it is connected with what my ancestors did. It was a great privilege.”
He also outlined his plans to launch a book about his family’s exploits, detailing the many adventures they undertook.
