Muscat: Oman Environmental Service Holding Company be'ah on Wednesday signed two cooperation agreements with Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) to establish a reuse centre and develop a project to produce biogas from organic waste.
The agreements were signed by HH Sayyid Dr. Fahd Al Julanda Al Said, Vice Chancellor of SQU and Eng. Tariq Ali Al Amri, CEO of be’ah.
The first agreement aims to establish a reuse centre to benefit from consumed materials and recover their economic value by finding alternative opportunities for reuse. The centre will be located within the university campus to promote the culture of reuse among students from different governorates. This will contribute to raising awareness and achieving sustainability.
The centre will receive reusable materials from local communities to repair and prepare those material for reuse by using innovative methods, culminating in the recycling of non-reusable materials.
The centre will also promote social and economic contribution by hiring and training individuals from limited-income segments. It also aims to refine their skills, and enable them to enter the labour market. Moreover, the centre targets enhancing local talents in art, design and professional skills through volunteering in the centre’s activities. Additionally, the center will benefit several sectors, such as education, employment, the environment, economy and culture.
The centre will also contribute to achieving be'ah's goals by promoting circular economy initiatives and green sustainability practices throughout Oman.
The second agreement aims to develop a project to produce biogas from organic waste diverted from engineered landfills through cost-effective and efficient biological techniques. This project targets reducing greenhouse gas emissions and producing biogas which can be utilized to produce electricity, in addition to an output of organic fertilizers.
