Muscat: Royal Oman Police has denied that it is on the lookout for an escaped convict, in a statement refuting claims made by a viral social media post.

An ROP official said in a statement, "The attached advertisement, as it appears in social media, was not issued (by ROP). Reporting or providing information about criminals is a national duty to protect the society and enforce the law by calling 9999 or informing to the nearest police station."

The text in the fake social media post read, "A financial reward for those who arrest the escaped convict and hand him over to the police, or provide information that could help in arresting him."
