Police drug busts lead to 14 expat arrests

Muscat: A total of 14 expats were arrested by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) in two separate cases, it was announced on Monday.
In the first case, 13 were arrested by police for smuggling khat at the Nabat Al Shuwaymiyah beach, and the drugs seized by police.
Khat is classified by the World Health Organisation as a "drug of abuse that can produce mild to moderate psychological dependence". Its symptoms can include hallucinations, depression and tooth decay.
Regarding the second case, police said, "A person of Asian nationality was arrested by Drug Combating Administration of the Royal Oman Police (ROP) in North Batinah, on the charges of entering the country illegally and peddling in drugs."
The ROP called on people to cooperate and inform the police of any knowledge of the trafficking and sale of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, by contacting the police hotline (1444) or emergency (9999) numbers.
