National Museum organises exhibitions highlighting Oman’s civilisational role

Muscat: The National Museum seeks to highlight the heritage and the civilisational, historical, cultural and scientific role of the Sultanate of Oman regionally and internationally.

It has launched initiatives and held exhibitions on Oman’s unique heritage through the ages in a bid to introduce Oman to audiences in the country and abroad. These activities are held in cooperation with a selected group of international leading and prestigious museums. The National Museum signed a number of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and agreements with these museums in the cultural and museum fields.

Since the opening of the National Museum on 15 November 2022, it has organized many external exhibitions and hosted a number of museum exhibitions for cultural exchange, enriching cultures, developing mutual understanding and cooperation with regional and international cultural institutions.

Jamal Hassan Al Moosawi, Secretary General of the National Museum, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that many events will be held in the upcoming months within the framework of the museum’s annual programme to introduce Oman’s history and civilization. The programme also aims to open channels of dialogue between cultures and generations to enhance knowledge transfer.

He pointed out that as part of the agreement signed with the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, an exhibition will be held in April 2023. This exhibition will highlight the civilization of frankincense and the culture of perfumery in Oman, which is a historical experience that extends to nearly five thousand years.

Al Moosawi added that the National Museum pursues cultural diplomacy with the aim of strengthening the bonds of friendship and kinship with Arab and friendly countries.

The museum also seeks to introduce visitors to the culture of “Al Teeb” or “Perfumery” with a focus on the ancient history of frankincense, said the National Museum’s Secretary General.

Moreover, twenty three loan pieces of art selected from the masterpieces of the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon are currently being displayed in Bayt Greiza until 7 May 2023, he further noted.

Al Moosawi pointed out that the National Museum is set to unveil a number of important events that will be launched in January 2023 within the framework of the Sultanate of Oman's celebrations of the golden jubilee of establishing diplomatic relations with the Swiss Confederation and with the Republic of Austria.
