Oman football: Duqm Refinery Cup from Tuesday

Muscat: The third edition of Duqm Refinery Cup football tournament kicks off on Tuesday with the participation of local teams and others representing the companies and projects in Al Wusta Governorate.
According to information received from the organisers, the popular tournament will showcase 32 teams divided into eight groups of four squads each.
The first round matches will take place on December 12 and 13 while the play-offs and final are scheduled for December 19 and 20.
The Duqm Refinery Cup is one of the most anticipated annual sports events in Al Wusta Governorate and is organised by Duqm Refinery. Oman Drydock Company are the winners of the last two editions.
Commenting on the initiative, Jasim bin Hassan Al Ajmi, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Duqm Refinery, said: “We are committed towards building a strong relationship with the local community and are using football as a means to engage with youth in the region. Duqm Refinery Cup is a platform for friendship and fair competition between the participating teams. We look forward to have an exciting tournament.”
The top three teams from this year’s competition will qualify for the ‘world’s largest amateur five-a-side football tournament (F5WC) qualifiers’ to be held as part of 2018 Muscat Festival. The winners of F5WC qualifiers in Muscat Festival will represent the Sultanate in the finals to be held in Shanghai in September, 2018.
