Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has offered its condolences to the Republic of India over the incident of a cable bridge collapse on Machchhu river in Morbi.

"The Sultanate of Oman expresses its sympathy with the Republic of India over the accident of the collapse of a suspension bridge in the state of Gujarat in western India, and expressed its sincere condolences to the friendly Indian government and people and the families of the victims, and wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured, " Oman News Agency (ONA) said in a statement.

At least 140 people were killed after a pedestrian bridge collapsed in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Sunday evening, sending hundreds plunging into the Machchhu River.

About 350 people were on and around the bridge, a major tourist attraction, at the time of the collapse. A large number of those who died were children, women and older people, according to officials.

The 230-meter-long bridge was built over the Machchhu River during the British Empire in the 19th century.
