Muscat: The Council of Oman concluded its participation in the meetings of the 145th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Kigali, Rwanda from 11 to 14 October.
The meeting stressed the significance of empowering the presence of women at the parliaments, confronting the challenges facing presence of the youth in the parliamentary councils and establishing associations between the local communities and economy for achievement of comprehensive sustainable development.
The meetings saw the participation of over 10,000 representatives from the various regional and international parliaments who discussed the latest developments and issues related to sustainable development, human rights, international peace and security, the UN issues and the causes of women and youth among other issues.
The Council of Oman has actively participated in the meetings of the General Assembly, the 210th session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the meetings of the Executive Committee and the permanent and specialised committees through five consecutive days in Kigali.
The Council has participated in the activities of the meetings of the permanent committee of the 145th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the 34th session of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, which discussed the role of the parliaments in provision of further support to empower women.
The meetings also reviewed the experiences of the participating countries in the field of empowerment and protection and support of women, the challenges facing women on account of wars and immigration and a number of issues supportive to equality between men and women. The Council of Oman was represented in the meetings by members of the Stated Council; Dr. Mona bint Ahmed Al Sadoon and Maha bint Sulaiman Al Lamki.
The delegation has participated in the meetings of the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, which discussed the challenges related with the youth participations in national and international parliaments. Ammar Al Saadi, Member of Majlis Al Shura represented the delegation taking part in the meetings.
The participation of the Council of Oman included attending the meetings of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP) in the presence Khalid bin Ahmed Al Saadi, Secretary general of the State Council and Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary general of Majlis Al Shura.
The participation of the Council of Oman included the meetings of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, in which the Council of Oman was represented by Maha Al Lamki, member of the State Council and Ali Al Ghaithi, member of Majlis Al Shura. The participation also included the discussions of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development in the presence of Qasim Al Ameri and Ammar Al Saadi members of Majlis Al Shura.
The Council of Oman participated in the meetings of the Standing Committee on International Peace and Security in the presence of Dr. Mona bint Ahmed Al Sadoon, member of the Stated Council and Ali bin rashid Al Ghaithi, member of Majlis Al Shura. The members of the delegation also participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee of the United Nations Affairs which discussed climate change and the economic consequences of Covid 19 Pandemic among other issues.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Khalid bin Hilal Al Mawali, Chairman of Majlis Al Shura and head of the delegation met with a number of speakers of the regional and international parliaments. The meetings discussed the bilateral relations between the Sultanate and their respective countries. He also met with the chairmen of the Arab parliament and chairman of the Parliament of Rwanda.
