Third International Mathematics Conference begins at SQU

Muscat: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) held the Third International conference on 'Oman Mathematics Day' at its conference hall in SQU on
Monday.
The three day conference is being organised by Oman Mathematics Committee and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, college of Sciences. It includes four plenary talks, four workshops and five parallel sessions.
The opening ceremony was attended by His Highness Sayyid Taimur bin Assad Al-Said, Assisstant Secretory General for Communications at (TRC) and number of academics and officials.
Dr. Hamood Al-Harthi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Education presented his paper on the new mechanisms of teaching Math in the Ministry of Education during the academic year 2017-2018. He also talked about the changes which the ministry plans to implement for various subjects.
Dr. Mohammed Al-Ghafri, Assistant in Mathemtics and Statistics Department at SQU has expressed how the teachers can encourage the mathematical thinking for students and let them practice math in all their lives sectors.
Yusuf Al-Hooti, Mathematics teacher at the Abdullah bin Salam School said, "The conference will remove the blurring lines which teachers have especially with young new generation." He added, "There are many obstacles facing us so we need some facilities to improve this specialist."
Mohammed Al-Hashami, Math Teacher, Abu Muslim School in Dakhiliyah, said, "I think math is a really important field which will help in improving other fields in future. This what we work hard to achieve right now by making progress on our thinking and skills."
He pointed out that the conference tried to connect traditional methods of teaching with the new technology era, and that this would open a new space for coming generations to be more creative.
Professor Speer William, Director of Mathematics Learning Centre at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, will present a workshop titled 'Finding the power hiding in "I don't know"'.
Another workshop titled 'Developing Critical Thinking through mathematical problem solving' will presented by Dr. Iman Al-Osta, School of Arts and Sciences, Lebanon.
