Greek police clashed with protesters in Athens on Friday (November 17) after thousands marched to mark a bloody 1973 student uprising that helped topple the military junta which then ruled the country.

Dozens of protesters hurled stones and petrol bombs at police in the Exarchia district in central Athens, often the setting for such clashes.

Hooded youths set off fireworks and flares against police officers who responded with teargas and stun grenades.
