Muscat: Forty seven people were arrested for breaking marine fishing laws, Oman's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries announced.

"Fisheries control arrested 40 workers in Ras Madrakah who were violating the law of fishing, and seven workers in the area between Khaba and Daffa in Jalan Bani Bu Ali," the ministry announced online.

The ministry had recently announced that it would be clamping down on violators of the marine fisheries law, after it was revealed that the number of people caught fishing illegally in Oman rose by almost a quarter in 2016.
