Muscat: Royal Hospital doctors have used a medical technique for the first time in Oman in the treatment of a patient suffering from a prolapsed uterus.
Medics used an endoscope to install a medical device to stabilise the patient's uterus. It's the first time such a procedure has been completed in the Sultanate, officials say.
This medical intervention was conducted by a team from the Royal Hospital headed by Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Farsi, the Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, in collaboration with anesthesiologists and nursing staff.
"This therapeutic procedure has many advantages, including avoiding the patient undergoing hysterectomy, relieving the associated pain in the back area, minimising side-effects with the laparoscopy technique compared to the surgical procedures, not to mention the patient's ability to return to activities in a shorter period," Dr. Al Farsi said.The procedure took four hours, Al Farsi added.
After the treatment the patient, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "I want to thank the medical staff who performed this treatment, headed by Dr. Abdulrahman Al Farsi, which contributed to the elimination of the repeated pains that I suffered for 12 years in the back and abdomen, in addition to helping to stabilise the health status of the uterus."
A prolapsed uterus is a condition which mainly affects women over the age of 50, after multiple births, resulting in recurring pain in the back area.
