Oman receives light, moderate rain showers

Muscat: Light to moderate rains lashed several governorates of Oman during the past two days under the influence of a much weakened tropical depression.

Met officials said the tropical depression weakened and retreated to an area of low air pressure.

However, acoording to a statement of Oman Meteorology, the light to moderate rains caused “a number of wadis to overflow and there were low clouds all over Oman.”

“Weakness and retreat of the tropical depression to an area of low atmospheric pressure with the continued hovering of rain clouds over most of the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman will result in rainfall with varying intensity over the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta and parts of Dhofar Governorate,” Oman Meteorology said in the statement.

The Wilayat of Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar topped the list with the highest amount of rainfall during the past two days at 35 mm, according to the weather stations of the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources.

The Ministry listed a number of wilayats which received rains from July 17 to July 18, and it was as follows: “The Wilayat of Al-Jabal Al Akhdar 35 mm, Bidiyah 15 mm, Nizwa 12 mm, Bidbid and Seeb 10 mm and the lowest was in the Wilayat of Amerat and Ibra at 2 mm.”

The Maritime Security Centre (MSC) held its daily meetings to find out the latest developments of the tropical situation in the Arabian Sea and the resulting impact on maritime traffic, movement of ships in the region, in addition to the movement of commercial ports and sea fishing ports, and following up and activating the discussion of the roles and tasks of the various military, security and civilian agencies.

Earlier, emergency services across Oman had been put on alert on Sunday to handle any consequences that might arise from the expected weather conditions.

On Sunday, two citizens drowned in the Wilayat of Rustaq while four children were saved from drowning in Muscat governorate. Six shelters were also prepared in South Al Sharqiyah: Two in Al Khor, one in Ras Al Hadd, one in Masirah, one in Al Ashkarah and one in Jalan Bani Bu Ali.
