Muscat: The identities of two of the three victims who were reported missing after strong waves swept them into the sea at Mughsayl Beach in the Dhofar region have been discovered.
They have been identified as 42-year-old Shashikant Mhamane, and his six-year-old son, Shreyas, according to media reports in India. The search for the third person involved in the drowning – his nine-year-old daughter, Shruti – is still ongoing.
The family lived in Dubai in the neighbouring United Arab Emirates, and came to Oman to celebrate the Eid Al Adha holidays, making the trip to Salalah by road, according to pictures and videos shared by Shashikant on his Facebook page. They are originally from the town of Jath in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
Using his social media accounts to document his group’s trip to Salalah, he shared many poignant memories of the journey, including a midnight picture en route to their destination, and a snap marking their departure from the UAE.
In light of the incident, friends of Shashikant had been hoping he would be found safe and well.
“Hope we are hearing is not true,” said a friend of his, replying to Shashikant’s Facebook post.
Shashikant was one of five people involved in the accident that occurred on 10 July, when they were at Mughsayl beach, when they crossed the safety barrier, according to the Royal Oman Police. Two unfortunately drowned, while the other three – Shashikant, his son, and his daughter – were reported missing.
The Royal Oman Police has been searching extensively for the missing persons since the accident occurred.
