Applications sought in Oman for Nobel prize nominations

Muscat: If you’re a researcher in Oman, there are few better ways to make your country proud than by winning a Nobel Prize.
The Research Council (TRC) has recently opened applications for researchers for nominations for the Nobel Prize, which will be discussed at the 68th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, which will take place in the German town of Lindau, from June 24 to June 29, 2018.
Located on Lake Constance in Bavaria, Lindau has been hosting the conference since 1951, and brings many Nobel Prize Laureates to the town every year, and coordinates with more than 200 renowned science and research institutions across 65 nations, among them being The Research Council (TRC).
“In countries with academic partners, such as Oman, young scientists have to be nominated by these academic partners in order to be able to apply for participation in the meetings,” said Dr. Obaid Al Saeedi, director of the Programmes Department at TRC. “In its efforts to build research capacity and transfer knowledge, TRC is entitled to nominate up to three young scientists to attend the Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting.”
Dedicated to the fields of Physiology and Medicine, this year’s applicants at the Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting will have their research reviewed by a scientific committee, which is responsible for evaluating all the applications from young scientists across the globe.
Eligible candidates must be not be older than 35 years, show a genuine interest in science and research, receive strong support for their application from their academic advisor and/or by internationally renowned scientists, not having participated in previous Lindau Meetings, and commit themselves to being present for the full duration of the meeting.
Interested applicants can visit www.lindau-nobel.org/meeting for more details on the detailed nomination conditions and selection criteria for the 68th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting.
TRC has been an academic partner of these meetings since 2015, and Dr. Jauad El Kharraz, head of research at the Middle East Desalination Research Centre, says this is a great opportunity for young Omani scientists to gain inspiration from their peers.
“I have been involved with young scientists from across the world for a while now, and this is a great opportunity for Omani researchers to interact with other scientists,” he said.
“This will be a fantastic opportunity for them to gain inspiration and ideas from the other people who are present, because they will be many Nobel Prize winners there.”
“I think it would be great for scientists in Oman if they gain such a distinct honour and recognition, because this will really inspire other young researchers in the country,” added El Kharraz. “I think Oman should do more to put itself on the world’s scientific stage, and going to events like this is a very important part of that.”
