Muscat: The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (Sezad) organised the first Environment Forum today, with the collaboration of a group of companies specialised in providing environmental services and consultancy, and other corporates operating in the zone.
The forum was presided over by Eng. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Dheeb, Deputy Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (Opaz), and attended by Sheikh Zahir bin Ali Al Sunaidi, Deputy Wali of Duqm, representatives from the Environment Authority and other dignitaries in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm.
The first edition of the Environment Forum is aimed to strengthen and develop the cooperation between various entities and companies, operating in Sezad, in the field of environment protection and preservation. This forum serves as a platform to share the expertise of different entities in promoting sustainable environmental development and find new and innovative mechanisms to solve potential environmental problems and challenges. In addition, the forum aims to highlight the need for joining efforts to promote environmental preservation and reduce the potential environmental impacts resulting from the various construction and industrial activities in Sezad.
On the other hand, the forum shed light on the role played by the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, represented by the Environmental Regulatory Department in cooperation with environmental services companies, with regards to preserving the environment, protecting biological diversity, and assessing the environmental impacts of all economic activities and projects in the zone.
The forum also included reviewing the most important and insightful experiences of companies that provide various environmental services to projects and institutions. Further, discussion sessions were also held in which the difficulties and potential challenges and ways to develop procedures and find possible environmental solutions were highlighted.
It is worth noting that organising the first Environment Forum comes in line with Sezad’s ongoing efforts and commitment to protecting the environment. Earlier this year, the Special Economic Zone at Duqm launched the "Together for a Sustainable Environment in Duqm" campaign, which seeks to activate the partnership and cooperation between public and private sectors in the field of preserving the environment. This campaign was kicked off with a set of environmental activities, including beach clean-up drives in Duqm and organising events and initiatives aimed at enriching and highlighting biological and environmental diversity in the zone.
