Muscat : A team from the Royal Hospital successfully performed a thyroidectomy, extracting a thyroid gland weighing about 973.7 grams from a patient who had been suffering from an enlarged neck for five years.
Oman News Agency (ONA), said in a statement: "A medical team specialised in endocrine surgery at the Royal Hospital was able to perform a rare surgery, which consisted in removing a thyroid gland weighing about 973.7 grams from the neck of a patient who had been suffering from hypertrophy for five years."
Dr. Amru Ahmed Ridha, consultant endocrine surgeon at the Royal Hospital, said that this operation is a complex and rare operation due to the size and nature of the tumor. It also requires a lot of precision and skill because the tumor is located in an area rich in sensitive organs, arteries, veins, and nerves that control other body functions.
