Fused glass art on display in Muscat — and it's pure gold

Muscat: An exhibition by Sharifa Al Maruby, who uses 21 carat liquid gold in her work, will open tonight at Gallery Sarah.

Sharifa, now an economics graduate, produced her first work at the age of 12. While her interest was initially in black and white portraits her work later evolved into beautiful landscapes of neutral colours.

The colourful clothing and intricate jewellery, typical of Omani culture and heritage have been the main inspiration in Sharifa's choice of colours and sceneries.

Her experimentation with different techniques and styles is clearly reflected in the variety of eye-catching pieces.

Sharifa's paintings are protected between two pieces of glass which are fused together at high temperatures. Other pieces are made by using powdered glass to create different shapes and designs which are then fused. These are given either a smooth or a textured finish.

A touch of genuine 21 carat liquid gold adds the required elegance to some of her pieces. Her work is currently owned by collectors in Europe, Australia and the Middle East.

The exhibition will run until 12th October 2017.
