Disappointing day for Oman at Asian Indoor Games in Turkmenistan

Muscat: With tennis star Fatma Al Nabhani and sprinter Ahmed Mubarak Al Saadi failing to advance in their respective competitions, Oman experienced a disappointing day in the ongoing Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on Monday.
Omani medal hope Fatma Al Nabhani failed to clear the first hurdle in the women’s singles tennis tournament.
The Omani ace, who was recovering from an injury prior to the Games, suffered a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets defeat at the hands of Thai girl Chompoothip Jundakate.
Fatma’s defeat ended the Sultanate’s challenge in the singles competition as compatriot Maryam Al Balushi also went down fighting to Fiji’s Ruby Coffin 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2) in a first round match on Sunday.
Fatma will now team up with Sarah Al Balushi in the doubles competition, which is scheduled to start on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Mubarak Al Saadi missed the 400m final berth after finishing third in the Semifinal 2 on Monday.
Ahmed Al Saadi clocked 49.50 seconds to finish behind Pakistan’s Mehbood Ali (47.73) and India’s Amoj Jacob (47.94).
Earlier in the morning Round 1 heats, Al Saadi had a better time of 49.36 as he clinched the semifinal place with a second place finish in Heat 6.
Oman’s other medal hope and star sprinter Barakat Al Harthi will begin his campaign in the 60m competition on Tuesday.
Barakat, a two-time Olympian who won 60m gold in the 2016 Asian Beach Games, has a personal best time of 6.67 seconds in 60m indoors.
