Muscat: Two litter bins on Sawadi beach were set on fire last night, according to local volunteers.
"The containers were set ablaze using oil as an accelerator," said Yassir al Hadi, head of the Sawadi volunteer team. "That's a strong flame. This time, it was off to the side, but there are petrol-filled boats and wooden sheds all across the beach. We're glad nothing dangerous happened and are working with others to find the culprits."
According to the Penal Code, "setting fire to or near public or private property... is punishable by seven to fifteen years in prison".
Other forms of damage to public properties carry a fine of OMR10-500 and three months to three years in prison.
