Muscat: An Omani student has succeeded in inventing a new type of bioplastic using natural elements available in the Sultanate of Oman.

"Student Na'am Al Harrasi from the Wilayat of Rustaq in the Governorate of South Al Batinah was able to invent a new type of bioplastic using natural elements available in the Sultanate of Oman, such as rice water and fish scales in order reduce the cost of mass production of bioplastics, " Oman News Agency (ONA) said in a statement.

The project aims to develop biodegradable plastic from industrial plastics and to meet the challenges arising from the increasing ban on single-use plastics in the Sultanate of Oman and the world.

According to the website of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), it is hoped that this project, by using local materials, will reduce the cost of mass production of bioplastics and will also lead to saving the oceans from pollution.

Na'am Al Harrasi is the first youth intellectual property ambassador in the Sultanate of Oman, who was awarded this title by WIPO.
