Two-day workshop on endoscopy in Oman ends at Royal Hospital

Muscat: Royal Hospital organised a two-day workshop that focused on endoscopes, that concluded on Wednesday. More than 55 professionals from around the country joined in the workshop, which focused on the newest medical findings in the field.
Dr. Ruqaya Abdullah al Jardani, head of general surgery at the hospital, opened with a speech.
"Endoscopies are a successful solution to many of today's illnesses around the world because of how low impact they are compared to open surgery, how little time the patient needs to stay at the hospital, and also because of how quickly a patient can return to his or her normal life," she said.
A statement from the Ministry of Health read, "The first day focused on discussion a number of work papers, the historical evolution of the endoscope, and patient safety. It also handled the usage of endoscopies in treating colon and urinary tract problems, as well as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
"The second day tackled the maintenance and usage of various pieces of equipment."
Endoscopy is particularly useful in internal medicine, according to Doctor Basheer A. from Badr al Samaa hospital.
"First of all, it is a non-invasive procedure. You don't need to sedate the patient or give anaesthesia, just the localised spray is enough. Second, you don't have to admit the patient to the hospital. Sometimes, they can leave after the procedure.
"Lastly, it's very useful in internal medicine because it can detect things that you can't find by surgery; Things like endoscopy or MRI are low-impact procedures that can find gastric ulcers or cancers.
"Endoscopy is the only investigation that can really pick up gastric-intestinal cancers in that way. There is no other investigation that can do that," the doctor says.
