Environment group launches eco footprint awareness campaign in Oman

Muscat: Environment Society of Oman (ESO) has launched its 'Ecological Footprint' initiative to educate school children on the importance of preserving the environment, in partnership with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).
With the help of volunteers, ESO reached out to 21 government schools around the Sultanate and provided students with a presentation detailing simple behaviours that affect the environment and how to protect natural resources. The presentations were followed by recycling activities to show students how their everyday actions can have a major impact on the world around them.
Jawaher Al Ghafri, Education Coordinator, ESO, said, "We believe that building a more sustainable future begins with raising awareness, and with this theme we are targeting the youth of today. To preserve the environment and prepare the next generation for their role as stewards of Oman's natural wonders, it is important that we do our utmost to educate them on how the simplest activities can have an impact on the environment."
The initiative is part of ESO's 'Themed Education Program' that began in 2015 and has since covered three themes: 'Energy Saving', 'Oman’s Biodiversity', and 'Ecological Footprint'. The fourth theme will be 'Green Schools', which will be held later this year. The programme's mission is to empower students aged between 11 and 14-years-old with knowledge of conservation techniques, sustainable practices, climate change and the importance of biodiversity.
