Muscat: The Honourable Lady, Spouse of His Majesty the Sultan, visited the Mirbat castle Wednesday.
"The castle, in the Wilayat of Mirbat in Dhofar Governorate, is an important historical landmark," the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism said in a statement.
Upon arrival, the Honourable Lady listened to a briefing on the fort, its history and highlights of the site as the Honourable lady toured the castle's facilities, starting with the guards' suite.
Later, ascending to the top floor, the Honourable Lady saw the food preservation room, and the Wali’s Council, comparable to the Shura Council where matters of city governance were discussed.
She studied the various articles from the past the castle holds, and the purposes they served. This included the clothes and jewellery of the people of Dhofar in general and Mirbat in particular, a reflection of Omani cultural identity.
Panels also showcased traditional crafts, geology and architecture, social and economic life, environmental diversity and marine life of Mirbat.
The Honourable Lady expressed her happiness over the castle, its upkeep and development, and thanked the staff for highlighting the historical significance of the site.
