The Wilayat of Sur, located at the centre of the Governorate of Al Sharqiyah South has a number of famous ancient monuments including Bilad Sur Castle, Sunaysilah Castle, Al Ayjah Castle, Fanar Ras Al Meel and Ras Al Hadd Castle.
Bilad Sur Castle lies in the middle of Bilad Sur Plain in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. According to Oman’s Ministry of Tourism, “It is considered one of Wilayat’s biggest bastions. Bilad Sur Castle has four towers: Al Khandaq Tower, JalanTower and As Souq, while the fourth tower differs from the other three in that it has two storeys, the first of which overlooks the area outside the castle from all sides. The fort wall rises 6 metres.”
Sunaysilah Castle is another famous monument in Sur which was built on a hill overlooking Sunaysilah Village in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. “The fort’s length is 35 metres and is 30 metres wide. It includes four circular towers, three of which have cannons and the fourth was used for surveillance. Sunaysilah Castle has a gate overlooking walls that stretch for 55 metres and lead to a roofed and open courtyard,” according to Oman’s Ministry of Tourism. The castle was used to defend the village.
Ras Al Hadd Castle lies in Ras Al Hadd area int Sur in the Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. It is one of Ras Al Hadd historical monuments with a length of 16 metres and a width of 13 metres. It includes two towers and openings for defence and surveillance. The castle also has a number of facilities, the most important of which are the ammunition store and water well.
