Muscat: A draft law on protection of 'aflaj' sites listed on the World Heritage List was discussed by a Majlis panel on Tuesday.
The discussion came at the Majlis Al Shura Food and Water Security Committee’s 4th meeting of the second annual sitting (2016-2017) of the 8th term held under the chair of Hilal bin Said Al Yahyaie, Head of the Committee.
During the meeting the Committee discussed the draft law on protection and regularising the sites of aflaj (traditional irrigation system) listed on the World Heritage List, which was referred from the Council of Ministers.
The Committee hosted Salim bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary, Ministry of Heritage and Culture for Culture Affairs, Eng. Ali bin Mohammed Al Abri, Undersecretary, Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources for Water Resources Affairs, specialists from the ministries and specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs to listen to their views and remarks on the provisions of the draft law.
The committee discussed with the guests the amendments to the draft law and its chapters to ensure sound management and protection of aflaj, as well as the penalties stipulated in the draft law.
