Turkish Navy Ship visits Oman

Muscat: A reception was recently held onboard the Turkish Naval vessel TCG GELİBOLU, which is visiting Port Sultan Qaboos from February 17 to 21.
In his speech Atılay Ersan, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to the Sultanate praised Oman and highlighted the positive bilateral relations between the two countries which have existed for a long time.
“Turkey and Oman are enjoying friendly relations for more than five centuries in every field, and I must say that we are improving our cooperation satisfactorily in the area of defense as well.
“These visits display not only Oman’s pivotal role in supporting the peace and security in the region, but also the invaluable collaboration between our countries.”
He went on to explain the term ‘Gelibolu’ and its historical significance, “Gelibolu is one of the towns of Çanakkale, a city where I come from. It is a peninsula situated in the European part of Turkey between the Aegean Sea and the Dardanelles.
“Gelibolu is more known as Gallipoli. It is where one of the fiercest battles took place when the Allied forces attacked the peninsula in 1915 during the World War I.
The invasion attempt did not succeed and after eight months of heavy fighting the Allied forces had to withdraw but the battle cost a lot of lives.”
Ambassador Ersan also highlighted that the international community today is taking several measures to curb any dangers to seafarers, “Today the international community is working together to curb threats against the seafarers and international trade.
“Turkey having the means and the capacities did not spare any effort in actively joining the multinational operations to combat robbery and piracy in the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea and adjacent regions.”
Following their challenging missions, Turkish frigates frequently visit Muscat Sultan Qaboos and Salalah Ports where they feel at home.
“In this regard, I would like to express my sincere thanks to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and his government for the goodwill and support shown in every field.”
