On HM Orders, Council of Ministers issues decisions on Musandam development

Muscat: Within the context of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik’s attention and keenness to achieve comprehensive, sustainable development in the Governorate of Musandam and to bring about economic diversification based on the competitive potential of the Governorate and, to make it more attractive to investment, the Council of Ministers has issued the following decisions:

1.   To set up a branch for the University of Technology and Applied Sciences that provides a number of specialisations.

The University of Technology and Applied Sciences stated that the establishment of a branch in Musandam Governorate will be implemented in two phases according to the type of programmes that the university will include.

"The University of Technology and Applied Sciences confirms that the establishment of a branch in the Governorate of Musandam is one of the projects with an economic, scientific, touristic and social dimension and part of the comprehensive and urban development strategy for the development of the Governorate of Musandam and is in line with the Oman Vision 2040," Oman News Agency (ONA) said in a statement. 

The University of Technology and Applied Sciences said that the project will be implemented in two phases, according to the type of programs. The first phase includes qualitative programs including mechanical engineering, transportation systems engineering, energy systems engineering, construction engineering, building maintenance, logistics management and transportation systems management.

"The proposed programs for the second phase include marine navigation, fish products processing technology, and marine sports management," the University added 

2.   To establish an integrated system of strategic reservoir to achieve security in foods and medicinal drug stocks.

3.   To convert the Port of Khasab into a logistics hub in a bid to provide services and facilities that stimulate imports, exports and open direct export routes.

4.   To set up specialised economic and tourism zones that act as a propeller of tourism investment and related logistics activity.

Also, to declare the area of Mahas as an economic zone with the purpose of establishing and regulating light and medium industries, along with storage facilities to bolster Khasab Port activity.

His Majesty the Sultan gave directives to speed up the implementation of decisions of the Council of Ministers.

His Majesty also gave directives to develop a system of management and operation for those economic zones, set frameworks for incentives, enhance competitiveness and propose proper mechanisms to float them for investment.
