Five companies fined over consumer law violation in Oman

Muscat: Five judicial rulings in favour of consumers by courts in Sur and Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan were announced, after the accused parties were deemed to have violated consumer protection laws.
In the first and second cases, a number of commercial stores were charged with selling expired goods. This was a violation of Articles 7 and 19, which states the trade in any adulterated, corrupt, or counterfeit commodities, or any commodities not authorised for trading, is prohibited.
The accused party in the first case was sentenced to three months in prison and received a fine of OMR2,000, while the second accused party was fined OMR2,000.
The third and fourth cases involved the failure of some upholstery and furniture workshops to complete work that they agreed to do. The complainants subsequently reported the breach of contract to the Department of Consumer Protection.
In both cases, the workshops were in violation of Article 19. The presiding judge ruled on the pretext of failure to provide the service agreed on with the consumers and fined the workshops OMR2,200 each for breaching the law.
During the fifth case, the preliminary court in Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan issued a ruling against a commercial establishment for displaying several expired products for sale, a violation of Article 7 of the consumer protection law. The judge fined the store owner OMR300 and ordered the expired goods to be destroyed.
As a result of the cases, the public prosecution in Sur issued an order to charge any commercial establishment for displaying goods that did not add proper and up to date information of their products in Arabic.
Those found guilty will be fined OMR100.
