Salalah: Represented by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, the Sultanate of Oman today celebrated the World Intellectual Property Day under the theme of “Intellectual Property (IP) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity”.
The celebration was held in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Economy, Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s branch in Dhofar Governorate and firms supporting the event.
The ceremony was held at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment under the auspices of HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar.
A department for intellectual property and patents was inaugurated, to enhance institutional cooperation and realize the SDGs.
Then, HH Sayyid Marwan launched the Omani version of “DL101”, a standard course that provides basic knowledge about various aspects of IP and enables the participants to understand the rights of IP owners and users. The course, which is compatible with the laws and culture of the Sultanate of Oman, seeks to link theoretical aspects with practical aspects, notably by transferring knowledge from the institutional domain to the social arena.
The activities of the World Intellectual Property Day included a discussion panel on defining the role of IP in sustainable development. The discussion panel elaborated on means of soliciting public opinion and drafting proposals on how to benefit from IP and use it in realizing SDGs.
The ceremony also included the opening of a roadshow that showcased the contribution of various public and private establishments, innovators and inventors.
The event saw the assessment of teams participating in the “Innovation Vision Award” undertaken by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. The contest allocates prizes for the “Best Investment File” and the “Best Environmental Product”.
At the conclusion of the celebration, the chief guest felicitated winners of contests organized by the two ministries in the fields of inventions, innovations and intellectual property.
As many as 14,234 applications for “national” and “international” trademarks, “national” and “international” patents were issued during 2023, posting a 12.59 rise, compared to 2022 figures.
