Dubai: Oman police’s safety and security efforts through social media have won it recognition at the regional level.
Royal Oman Police (ROP), represented by the Directorate General of Traffic, won the Arab Social Media Influencers Summit Award under the ‘safety and security’ category in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.
The December 13-14 summit was held under the auspices of Sheikh Mohammed, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who conferred the award upon Brigadier Mohammad Al Rawas, Director General of Traffic.
According to the Arab Social Media Influencers Summit website, the Safety and Security Award “honours organisations and individuals involved in raising awareness on social media platforms about security and community safety, and addressing critical issues related to safety and security in the Arab region.”
The award was given to the ROP, based on the consistent role it has been playing, along with individuals and the community, in promoting awareness and traffic safety through its twitter account @roptraffic as well as tweeting about laws and regulations in an organised fashion. The ROP has merged its religious, scientific and literary values to create an effective awareness campaign through its social media accounts, including notifying the community about certain traffic detours, closure of roads and any congestion people could potentially face.
Brig. Al Rawas said, “Social media activity is important to influence a culture of traffic safety. It should be used as an additional medium, side by side with police patrols, to bring down the rate of injuries and deaths as we saw in the last few years.”
According to the ROP, 675 deaths were recorded due to traffic accidents in 2015, down from 816 in 2014, 913 in 2013 and 1,139 in 2012. Instances of injuries also came down in 2015 to 3,624, compared to 3,835 in 2014, 4,178 in 2013 and 4,514 injuries in 2012.
The Arab Social Media Influencers Summit Award highlights the most compelling social media driven initiatives run by Arab individuals and companies who have made a positive impact on the development of and prosperity of their communities while contributing to the progress and development of people at large.
